Punta Gorda Air Show 2009

The United States Navy Blue Angels will headline the 2009 Florida International Punta Gorda Air Show. It will be the team’s 11th visit to the Southwest Florida event.

The Navy precision flying team made the announcement today in Las Vegas at the Annual International Council of Air Shows Convention.The Blue Angels fly the F/A-18 Hornet. The Hornet is the first dual-role fighter/attack aircraft serving on the nation's front lines of defense. The team will be starting their 63rd year and flying this aircraft for the 23rd straight year in 2009.

Chairman of the local air show Fred Buckingham said the team has been a very big part of this event. He added: "the Blue Angels made their first appearance during the inaugural Florida International Punta Gorda Air Show in 1981. Their last appearance in 2005 came shortly after Hurricane Charley left major destruction at the Charlotte County Airport. We are excited and honored to have them back as our feature act this year. Their precise aerial maneuvers demonstrate the capabilities of modern high-performance aircraft and the team exhibits the professional qualities of Navy people who fly, maintain and support these aircraft."

USS Hartford Damaged In Early-morning Collision

The USS Hartford, a nuclear-powered attack submarine named after Connecticut's capital city, was damaged during an early-morning collision with another U.S. naval vessel in the narrow Strait of Hormuz between Iran and the Arabian peninsula, the Navy reported.

The Navy said the incident, involving the amphibious ship USS New Orleans, occurred Thursday at about 1 a.m. local time, or 5 p.m Eastern Standard Time. Fifteen sailors aboard the Hartford were slightly injured but able to return to duty, the Navy said. No injuries were reported aboard the New Orleans.

There was no damage to the Hartford's atomic propulsion system. The Navy said the New Orleans, designed to land U.S. Marine Corps forces, experienced a ruptured fuel tank, resulting in a diesel fuel spill of 25,000 gallons.

The Navy said that after the collision, both ships were operating under their own power and were headed to undisclosed locations for repair and evaluation.

Both ships were heading to port and moving in the same direction when the collision occurred in one of the world's busiest and most dangerous shipping lanes. The Navy said the Hartford was submerged at the time, but it is withholding further detail pending investigation.

Both ships were involved in regularly scheduled deployments to the region and were conducting security operations, the Navy said. The Navy does not detail ship deployments for security reasons, but in the past submarines transiting the Strait have typically been involved in protecting naval fleet operations, protecting commercial shipping and supporting U.S. troops in Iraq and elsewhere.

The Strait of Hormuz is in a heavily traveled choke point 34 miles across at its narrowest connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. About 40 percent of globally traded oil leaves the Gulf region through the Strait, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. One of U.S. Central Command's key missions in the Gulf region is to ensure the free flow of oil and energy supplies.

The USS Hartford is an attack submarine of the Los Angeles class whose keel was laid by in Groton in February 1992 by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics. She was launched in 1993 and is berthed at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in Groton.

In October 2003, the Hartford ran aground near La Maddalena in Sardinia with sufficient force to cause substantial damage to her rudders, sonar and electronics.

The submarine is the second ship to be named after Hartford. The first was a sail and steam-powered sloop of war commissioned in 1859. The first Hartford served initially as flag ship of the U.S. Navy's East India Squadron.

Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, the original Hartford became Adm. David Farragut's flagship in the Western Gulf of Mexico Blockading Squadron. It entered history during the Civil War battle of Mobile Bay when Farragut issued the order now remembered as the battle cry "Damn the torpedoes … full speed ahead."

Marcus Schrenker was arrested at a Florida campground in January, two days after he allegedly bailed out of his plane over Alabama to flee personal and financial problems.

The plane crashed 200 miles away in Florida.

Marcus Schrenker faces federal charges in Florida and Indiana as well as a half-dozen lawsuits related to his alleged bilking of investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

News About The Breakdown of Empress Casino Joliet Fire

Fire Chief Joe Formahals said the fire at the Empress Casino in southwest suburban Joliet was sparked by the construction in an area where new seats were being added.

A lot of drywall was being stored in that area as well, he said.

Rarely does the Joliet Fire Department call for assistance but trucks from Troy, Rockdale and other departments started to roll in shortly after noon. Most appear to be water trucks.

Flames are still shooting out of the roof of the building at the casino on Route 6 as of 1 p.m. A second MABAS tender box was issued about 1 p.m. calling in even more departments to help battle the extra-alarm fire.

Frank Quigley, general manager, spoke to employees who had been gathering under the carport of the hotel.

"All kinds of kudos to you guys for pulling off an extremely professional evacuation," Quigley said. "There were no injuries."

He went on to say the fire appears to be contained in the pavilion area and not in the casino itself.

Michelle Bell, marketing director, said there was a $50 million renovation project in the pavilion area with new food outlets under construction.

Quigley asked employees to stick around for a while. "I really do not know what is going on yet," he said. "When I know something I will tell you."

No official reports have been issued by the fire department.

A ladder truck is spraying water from high above the roof. Smoke from the blaze is visible for miles.

By midday, firefighters were trying to contain the fire to the construction area, which is attached to the main casino complex, CBS news reported. Fire appeared to be spreading to other areas, but the riverboat itself was not affected. Scaffolding and other construction equipment was seen inside the burning wing.

Plumes of thick black smoke were rising from a wing of the complex, and violent orange flames were spreading across the roof. Construction equipment was seen around the wing that was on fire.

Bob Bennet of Joliet was in the casino around 10 a.m. when a voice came over the PA sytem.

"They told us we had to evacuate because there was a small fire," Bennet said. "Everyone got up and left. It went well, there was no one panicking, no pushing or shoving."

At first, gamblers were told they would be able to get back in after about an hour, but later were informed by security guards that the casino would be closed for the day.

Laura Carter of Orland Park had hoped to cash her $94 voucher but was told the vouchers would be good for about a year.

No injuries have been reported.

Sarah Gronert, a 22-year-old pro from Germany, finds herself under scrutiny from her opponents and their coaches, who believe that a unique gender issue from birth should make her ineligible for the woman's tour.

Three years ago, those issues almost caused Sarah Gronert, ranked No. 619 in the world, to abandon her career. Though she has since returned to competitive tennis, the dialogue that continues to surround her relates not to her ability, but to her biology.

Sarah Gronert was born with male and female genitalia. After undergoing surgery, she's now medically certified as a woman. That's not good enough for some, though.

"There is no girl who can hit serves like that, not even Venus Williams," said Schlomo Tzoref, the coach of Julia Glushko, who Gronert recently beat on her way to winning the Raanana tournament in Israel in early March. "When I heard her story, I was in shock. I don't know if it's fair that she can compete or not. She does have an advantage, but if this is what the WTA have decided, they probably know best. If she begins to play continuously, within six months she will be within the Top 50."

It's tough to piece together the details of Sarah Gronert's story. Her story has yet to really reach American shores, so facts have to be parsed together from various foreign language websites. Yet Tzoref isn't the only one who sees the potential for Sarah Gronert to climb the ranks of the women's tour, which will surely lead to more conversation -- and infamy -- around the world regarding her standing on the tour.

We do know that, at 19, the harsh words and treatment from peers almost led Gronert to retire. Instead, she underwent surgery to remove the male genitalia and, after a struggle with the WTA that needed a petition and special committee to resolve, was allowed to compete again.

Sarah Gronert has appeared in nine tournaments in the last three years, winning two -- the Raanana tournament on March 2 and the German Kaarst tournament on January 19 -- this year. The purse for both titles was $10,000 each. Her competitors feel she had an unfair advantage towards winning those purses which will lead her to continue to rise in the sport unfairly. The longer Gronert competes, the more fevered the conversation grows (her Wikipedia page was deleted due to constant abuse by users).

"This can not be. This is not a woman, it's a man. She does not have the power of a woman and no woman has such a technique," Tzoref said. "She serves like a man. It's very strange."

Last night Loyola Marymount scored 65 points in a big loss to San Diego. 18 years ago, that would have been a disappointing output at halftime with the "Gasoline On Fire" offense led by Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble.



If I were to rank the most jaw dropping sports moments as a child, Gathers untimely death 18 years ago today would rank right near the top.

That '89-90 LMU Lions team was as fun a team to watch as there has even been in college hoops. Kimble and Gathers basically took turns dropping 50 points and could have very well crashed the Final Four party. Even without Gathers, Kimble led them to the Elite Eight, famously shooting his first free-throw each game with his left hand.

It's a little too sappy for my liking, but here's a little tribute video below. The Today Show interview above is a little more interesting in retrospect.

Reports of a Walmart Shooting Gang Initiation requiring the random shooting of three women at a Walmart are a hoax.

Walmart Shooting Gang Initiation Rumors in Springfield, Kentucky were reported by some outlets of local media.. Kentucky police immediately responded that they had received no such reports but people remained panicked.

Many people called KY3 News starting about 2:15 p.m. Thursday to say they received this text message on their cellular telephones: "do not go to wal-mart tonight. gang initiation to shoot 3 women. not sure what wal-mart and confirmed on TV."

This message is a hoax. Springfield police know nothing about it. KY3 News did not report it or start the text message.

Snopes.com, which debunks or verifies electronically-spread rumors spread, says this hoax, or a variant of it, has been around since 2005.

More reports of other planned Walmart shootings popped up in other states suggesting the urban legend may be part of a targeted rumor spreading spree. Police in Florida were also dealing with false reports of a gang initiation shooting in an Orange County Walmart store.

On Wednesday evening, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said they haven’t heard of the rumor in this area, but then again it’s nothing to worry about.

A spokesperson with Walmart said Wednesday the company is aware of the e-mail.

They told News 13 the security of its employees and customers are a top priority, and even though they believe this is just a rumor, they are taking it seriously and working with local authorities to beef up security measures.

Officials also said the age of technology could be why this rumor is spreading so quickly as people simply forward the email to their friends and family.

48 Blade Meat Tenderizer

The 48 blade meat tenderizer is one of the most used products in my home. We use it on steak, roast, pork and boneless chicken breasts. I know, you say that chicken breasts are already tender. That's what I said too. Until I tenderized them one time with the 48 blade meat tenderizer. Now, I always tenderize chicken breasts.

I am always getting new questions on the 48 blade meat tenderizer. Following are the answers to the most asked.

Why does the 48 blade meat tenderizer work better than a meat mallet?
The stainless steel blades slice through the connective tissue that makes the meat tough. Using a meat mallet, you are trying to accomplish the same thing by bursting the connective tissue with the impact of the meat mallet. You can see why the 48 blade meat tenderizer would be more efficient and it also maintains the original texture of the meat better..

I have heard that cutting the meat lets out all the juices and dries out the meat. How can the meat still be juicy if the 48 blade meat tenderizer cuts the meat?
It is absolutely true that if you cut the meat while it is cooking, the juice runs out and dries the meat. However, when you use the 48 blade meat tenderizer, you are cutting the meat before you cook it. You are then placing it on a hot grill, under a hot broiler or in a hot frying pan. There is some controversy over whether searing the meat locks in the juices or not. But, whatever the reason, the meat remains juicy as long as it is not over cooked. The most important thing to remember, let the meat rest for about 5 minutes after cooking before cutting it. If you cut it immediately, the juice will run out. If you wait, the juice get absorbed back into the drier parts of the meat.

When using the 48 blade meat tenderizer, do I cook the meat for the same amount of time?
No. Because the 48 blade meat tenderizer creates thin channels in the meat, heat penetrates faster and most meats will cook 25% to 40% quicker. These thin channels also have another benefit. They help ensure even cooking in meats that have high and low thicknesses. (Such as chicken breasts.)

How do you use the 48 blade meat tenderizer?
Each person has their own idea of how tender they like their meat. I particularly like the flavor of strip steaks. But, sometimes strip steaks can be very tough. This is how I tenderize my strip steaks. Place the steak on a cutting board. Use one that has a little give to it. If you use the hard cutting boards or your counter top, you can bend the tips of the blades. If you accidentally bend the tips of a few blades, the meat tenderizer will still work, but, it will be less efficient. Press the 48 blade meat tenderizer through the steak covering the entire surface for the steak. It will tenderize an area about 1/2" by 3" at a time. I then tenderize that side of the steak 2 more times (One time 45 degrees to the right of the original pattern, the other time 45 degrees to the left). I plump up the steak after each time by lifting and pressing lightly in on the sides. I then repeat the same process on the other side of the steak. The steak will be pressed thinner than it originally was by this process. But, I then plump it up again before cooking. It will then further plump itself up near original thickness during the cooking process. The amount you tenderize the steak is a trial and error process depending on how tender you like your steak and what cut of meat you are using.

As far as Walmart Gang Initiation is concerned, it is no doubt a rumor. The Walmart Gang Initiation report says that the gang initiation will involve killing one to three women in Walmart parking lot on Thursday in Broward Country.

Is the Walmart Gang Initiation report believable?

Police says the reports are not true, "These hoaxes and urban legends have been around forever. Now with the Internet they seem to travel with lightning speed."

If you receive emails about this "Walmart gang initiation", throw it to your bin. It is a hoax that has been in existence since 2005, and originating from Memphis, Tennessee.
