BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Manatee County Sherriff's Office has told the Pirates that Minor League outfielder Jose Tabata was not involved in his wife's alleged kidnapping of an infant, Pirates president Frank Coonelly said in a statement on Wednesday.

Tabata's wife, Amalia Tabata Pereira, is being questioned in the abduction of Sandra Cruz-Francisco, a two-month old girl who Pereira allegedly took from a Plant City, Fla., family on Monday. The infant was found safe on Tuesday in Bradenton, Fla., the same city where the Pirates hold Spring Training.

"Jose was as shocked as the rest of us upon hearing the news and has cooperated fully with law enforcement officials," Coonelly said in the statement. "The Pirates organization will continue to do anything and everything we can to assist and support Jose during this difficult personal time.

"Due to the nature of this ongoing investigation, we cannot discuss any specifics of the case, other than to say that, like Jose, we are extremely thankful the young child was safely returned to her family," Coonelly added. "Our hearts go out to her and her family for the pain they must have endured during the hours that she was missing."

Tabata issued his own statement on the matter on Tuesday night.

"I was shocked to be told today that my wife has been arrested for kidnapping," he said. "I am hurt, frustrated, and confused by her actions. I have and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials in any way that I can. Until I have all of the facts, I cannot comment any further."

Tabata, 20, married amalia tabata pereira, 43, in January 2008, according to Hillsborough County records. Tabata was traded by the Yankees to the Pirates last July in a Trade Deadline deal that netted the Pirates four players in exchange for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. He was recently listed as the Pirates' third-best prospect, according to Baseball America.

Tabata, who was put on the Pirates' 40-man roster this past offseason, participated in Major League camp this spring. He was optioned to Double-A Altoona on March 18 and has been participating in Minor League camp since.

Amalia Tabata Pereira appeared in a Manatee County court on Wednesday and will remain in jail on a $750,000 bond. She is reportedly going to be moved back to Hillsborough County, the location of the kidnapping, at some point soon.

She has been charged with interference with child custody, kidnapping and false imprisonment, The Associated Press reported.

The baby, Sandra Cruz-Francisco, was taken from her mother, Rosa Sirilo-Francisco, at about 3 p.m. on Monday by a woman her family simply knew as "Janet," Plant City police told the AP.

According to the Tampa Tribune, Sirilo-Francisco took the baby to the Plant City Health Department for a checkup and met "Janet," who claimed to be an immigration official and told the mother that immigration officers were waiting at her home to deport her and the baby's father to Mexico. "Janet" said she would help the parents, but she needed to take the baby.

The Tribune reported that the two women then drove the baby to a farm where the baby's father works, where "Janet" relayed the same story to him. Soon after, the mother gave "Janet" the baby. This story has not been confirmed by Plant City police, according to the AP.

Plant City police Capt. Darrell Wilson told the AP on Tuesday evening that Pereira has a criminal record, with theft and fraud convictions. Wilson also said that Pereira has a number of known aliases. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told the AP that they are investigating the matter.

Josh Nochimson - NCAA Rules Violations

Josh Nochimson - News

Connecticut potentially committed NCAA rules violations in its recruitment of former guard Nate Miles, Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday.

The Web site reported that according to multiple sources, between 2006 and 2008, Miles was provided with lodging, transportation, restaurant meals and representation by Josh Nochimson, a former UConn student manager who had become a professional sports agent and formerly represented ex-Huskies star Richard Hamilton.

According to the report, one of UConn's assistants knew about the relationship between Nochimson and Miles as early as fall of 2006, and that phone records show UConn coaches made thousands of phone calls and text messages to Nochimson over the next two years.

Under NCAA regulations, Nochimson is deemed a representative of UConn's athletic interests because of his connection to the basketball program. Therefore, he was barred from recruiting Miles, from contacting Miles or his family, or from providing anything of value to Miles.

Eliza Shlesinger - Last Comic Standing Winner

Eliza Shlesinger in Last Comic Standing sixth-season said she's "not a female comic" and is instead "a comedian who happens to be female."

"I know that it registers with other people that I'm a female, but it has never registered with me in all the comedy I've done over the years. That's never been an issue. I've never blamed it, I'd never use it as a crutch," Eliza Shlesinger told Reality TV World during a Friday conference call.

"I think to a lot of people it means a lot of different things. But for me, I'm just Eliza Shlesinger and I won. I'm a comedian that won. The female thing I can't comment on because I just don't feel that in my heart."

Regardless of Eliza Shlesinger's sex, the 25-year-old from Dallas, TX became the first ever female to win Last Comic Standing when she captured the sixth-season title based on home viewer votes cast immediately following last Thursday night's penultimate episode, which saw each of the Top 5 finalists deliver a stand-up routine.

However it wasn't the first time home viewers got to see Eliza Shlesinger's stand-up in a competitive setting, as she was challenged in both of the sixth-season's pre-taped comic showdowns.

"No one ever voted for me, they always just challenged me," she explained to Reality TV World. "If you really look at it, the majority of people didn't try to get me out of the house. It was those who were voted for that thought I'd be the weakest."

They were wrong, as Eliza Shlesinger was single-handedly responsible for eliminating Esther Ku and God's Pottery before doing the same to Paul Foot and Papa CJ via the showdowns.

"I was always very vulnerable because I kind of just knew that it would always be me -- not so much getting voted off, but always being challenged," she told reporters. "So I was always ready for it. I never for a second thought I was untouchable or invincible until last night just after the show ended."

Eliza Shlesinger conceded that she is "100%" certain her appearances in the showdowns played a role in her victory.

"I would say through others' doubt is where I grew stronger. Had those people not looked at me as a girl who had no material, or as a threat or a nothing -- I got to showcase my stand-up for the world when no one else was doing it," she told Reality TV World. "I think the audience got a vested interest in me as the underdog early on. I think that was the key in me winning."

Eliza Shlesinger described herself as a "very competitive person" who wants "to win more than anything" whenever she's challenged, so it should come as no real surprise she performed so well during the showdowns.

"I knew that I had to prove myself to myself and to the audience," she said. "At the end of the day, the audience was my main concern. I don't really care what the other comics think of me."

Despite being the only female finalist once Ku was ousted early on, Shlesinger said she had no real problems sharing a house with a bunch of guys.

"It was fine. Everybody was really respectful. We never were at each other's throats. I don't know if professional is the right word, but it was fine. It wasn't like I was in a frat house. We were all there with a common goal," she said. "I came in with a goal and regardless of who was in the house I would have done my best to achieve that goal."

Eliza Shlesinger said she watches "pretty much everything on VH1 or E!" and knows it's "embarrassing."

"These shows are the reason America is becoming not such a good place as far as pop culture goes. This is the reason people don't like us is because of shows like this, but I can't stop watching them," she admitted. "I will watch anything that's a reality show that has bad editing and a bad storyline to be honest with you."

However she could never bring herself to watch Last Comic Standing's previous seasons.

"If I watch someone on stage I get anxious -- I want to be on stage. So I never watched Last Comic because it would make me anxious to watch other comics, just as a comedian that's how I feel," she said. "So I never got around to watching the show before, because I'm either on that show or not a part of it. Of course I'll watch it from now on because I got it out of my system."

For winning Last Comic Standing, Shlesinger received the grand prize of $250,000, an exclusive talent deal with NBC, a brand new Honda Pilot, and a guest appearance in Jubilee! at Bally's Las Vegas.

Her first thought was to buy a car, but since NBC already took care of that she has other more mundane plans for the money.

"I really want to be financially responsible. I know this sounds boring, but I'm going to pay-off my one student loan that I have, which is a small one. I'm going to get an operation for my cat so his ear stops dripping wax. I know that's gross," she said. "I think I'm just going to put the rest of it aside for when I actually find something that I need because I'm a pretty simple person."

Jake DeSantis - Latest News

Jake DeSantis

Jake DeSantis is getting out who is an executive VP in AIG's financial products unit. We know this because the NYTimes has his resignation letter, penned to CEO Edward Liddy.

It's a comprehensive rebuke of the AIG-admonishers in Congress and of Liddy himself, who was "not strong enough to withstand the shifting political winds," and committed a "breach of trust" in allegedly asking for the bonus money to be returned only shortly before his Congressional appearance last week, DeSantis says.

Here's excerpt that gives a good insight into how the AIG employees are feeling. Note that DeSantis was not among the group that dealt in the ultimately poisonous credit default swaps:

As most of us have done nothing wrong, guilt is not a motivation to surrender our earnings. We have worked 12 long months under these contracts and now deserve to be paid as promised. None of us should be cheated of our payments any more than a plumber should be cheated after he has fixed the pipes but a careless electrician causes a fire that burns down the house.

A common argument against paying retention bonuses to the AIG employees has been, essentially: Where else can they go? Not only is this the ugliest job market in decades, they're also stained with the AIG name. But not so fast. De Santis says this:

Redoubt Volcano Eruption

Monday 23 March 2009 0
Mount Redoubt Volcano Ready for Eruption!

Mount redoubt volcano activity compelled the seismologists and geologists to raise the alert level, about the eruption of redoubt volcano. Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano erupted four times overnight, sending an ash plume more than 9 miles high into the air, but the state's largest city has likely been spared from any ashfall.

Geophysicist John Power said no cities have yet reported any ash fall from the volcano, but noted that it's still early.

Using radar and satellite technology, the National Weather Service is predicting ash to start falling later Monday morning.

Dave Stricklan, a hydrometeorogical technician with the National Weather Service, expected very fine ash

"Just kind of a light dusting," he said. He said the significant amount of ash probably dropped immediately, right down the side of the volcano.

"The heavier stuff drops out very quickly, and then the other stuff filters out. There's going to be a very fine amount of it that's going to be suspended in the atmosphere for quite some time, but nothing to really affect anything such as aviation travel. The heavier stuff will filter out," he said.

The 10,200-foot Redoubt Volcano, roughly 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, last erupted during a four-month period from 1989-90.

But the volcano became restless earlier this year. The observatory had warned in late January that an eruption could occur at any time.

Increased earthquake activity over the past 48 hours prompted scientists to raise the alert level for Mount Redoubt on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, 40 to 50 earthquakes were being recorded every hour.

A steam plume rising about 1,000 feet above the mountain peak was observed Saturday.

Pearl Fryar - Finest Topiarist

Sunday 22 March 2009 0
Pearl Fryar, the man is considered the finest topiarist in North America and for whom there is a One-Hour documentary.

There’s always going to be obstacles. The thing you do is don’t let those obstacles determine where you go. -Pear Fryar

I have watched that documentary before and it’s not only uplifting in regards to showing what one guy can do when he wills himself to do something but… no it’s way beyond it.

Mr. Pear Fryar is an extraordinary guy, and I know, I know him.
Pearl at this event or that event. We were even in Virginia at the American Hort. Society at the same time-we didn’t know the other was going to be there.

When, I said WHEN you watch tonite, you’ll find out Pearl is about more than a guy with some trimmers, shears, and lots of ladders.

He’s a great member of his community, a leader, a role-model, and a big influence on his neighbors.

“If people see you trying hard to achieve something, sooner or later some of them are bound to try to help you.” -Pearl Fryar

Amongst other things he also is a host for groups on bus tours, car tours, and a guy that has now demonstrated and talked about his techniques internationally.
That’s some really awesome stuff for a guy who just wanted to have the “Yard of the Month”.

Mr. Pear Fryar you are an inspiration to us all.

Kristin Davis Madam - Secrets Little Black Book

Kristin Davis Madam

How revealing! Accused Manhattan madam Kristin Davis had an eye for business with a black book containing the names of customers who plunked down thousands for their pleasure.

Joe Blow paid cash. Mr. Adams came back two dozen times. David W. canceled because his wife was looking for him.

The secrets of those men and more than 2,000 other johns are laid bare in Manhattan madam Kristin Davis' little black book, obtained exclusively by the Daily News.

It's not actually a book, but a computer spreadsheet that should strike fear into the heart of any customer of Wicked Models, Maison de L'Amour or New York Body Miracle.

It logs more than $1.1 million in business and provides a rare and tantalizing glimpse into the workings of a high-priced call girl ring that attracted the rich and powerful.

There are lawyers, doctors, venture capitalists, out-of-town businessmen and even a professional poker player - successful men who thought nothing of spending $1,000 for an hour of illicit sex.

Davis, whose multimillion-dollar empire was dismantled this week, is rumored to have the "biggest black book in America," her lawyer has said.

But law enforcement officials yesterday shot down a report that then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been identified as a regular client of bottle blond Davis.

Usher syndrome is an inherited condition which results in hearing loss and a progressive loss of vision from Retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The hearing loss is thought to be congenital, and ranges from moderate to profound. RP can take place without hearing loss. The situation is named after a British ophthalmologist, C.H. Usher, who in a paper in 1914 illustrated numerous cases in which the link between congenital deafness and RP was stressed. However, as far back as 1860 workers such as von Graef and Liebreich in Berlin were sentient of the link between congenital deafness and RP, especially in consanguinous marriages.

This term describes not one disease but a group of hereditary diseases of the retina. The retina is the light sensitive tissue inside the eye in which the first stages of 'seeing' take place. With RP the retina slowly degenerates and loses its ability to transmit pictures to the brain. In advanced stages characteristic clumps of pigment appear on the retina and can be seen through an ophthalmoscope.

Symptoms

The first symptom to appear in RP is night blindness; this may also be coupled with difficulty in adapting to bright light or rapidly changing light conditions. Difficulty with dark adaptation can occur in childhood, and although it may be noticed it is seldom attributed to RP, but rather clumsiness, stupidity or even lack of carrots!

Cervical dysplasia May Lead To Cancer

Cervical dysplasia is the description of the appearance of abnormal cells on the cervix surface (uterus’s lowest part). The classifications of these changes in cervical tissue are mild, moderate, or severe. While cervical dysplasia itself is not proved to have caused any health problems, it is considered to be a precancerous condition.

If the treatment is not provided to cure cervical dysplasia may lead towards the early state of cancer known as carcinoma in situ, and eventually to invasive cervical cancer.

It can take 10 years or longer for cervical dysplasia to develop into cancer. Dysplasia can be detected from a Pap smear, the single most important step that a woman can take to prevent cervical cancer.

Mild dysplasia is the most common form, and up to 70% of these cases regress on their own (i.e., the cervical tissue returns to normal without treatment). Moderate and severe dysplasia are less likely to self-resolve and have a higher rate of progression to cancer. The greater the abnormality, the higher the risk for developing cervical cancer.

Cervical dysplasia does not cause symptoms; therefore, regular screening and early diagnosis are important. Detecting and treating dysplasia early is essential to prevent cancer. For this reason, most physicians quickly remove suspicious cervical lesions and require frequent Pap smears to monitor for recurrences.

Oakland Police Shooting Protest Ends In Violence

Some of those protesting the death of Oscar J. Grant III damage businesses and cars. A former transit police officer is charged in the case.

By Maria L. La Ganga and Maura Dolan
January 16, 2009

A demonstration outside Oakland City Hall to protest a shooting of an unarmed man in the back by a transit police officer ended violently after a group began damaging businesses and cars.

Hundreds of people gathered at City Hall on Wednesday and marched to the Alameda County Courthouse, shouting, "We will march, we will chant, until there's justice for Oscar Grant!" and "I am Oscar Grant!" Organizers also called for the resignation of county Dist. Atty. Tom Orloff, doubting his ability to successfully prosecute accused police officers. Police in riot gear were out in force.

The shooting of Oscar Grant, a 22-year-old African American, by a 27-year-old white officer who recently resigned also sparked a protest a week ago that ended in more than 100 arrests and scores of damaged buildings and torched cars in downtown Oakland.

Addressing the group on Oak Street between the courthouse and the county administration building, Grant's grandfather rejoiced that "they got the man who killed my grandson." Oscar Grant Sr. also beseeched the crowd to "keep peace."

But despite his plea, the demonstration ended violently after a small group splintered off and damaged local businesses and several cars parked along the streets.

Johannes Mehserle was arrested Tuesday night in Zephyr Cove, Nev., nearly a week after resigning from the Bay Area Rapid Transit District police force in the wake of the New Year's Day shooting death of Oscar J. Grant III, authorities said Wednesday.

"At this point, what I feel the evidence indicates is an unlawful killing done by an intentional act," Orloff said Wednesday in announcing a murder charge against Mehserle in the case.

Legal experts said it was rare for an officer to be charged with murder in connection with an on-duty shooting, and that convictions are difficult.

Mehserle's attorney, Christopher Miller, said he expected that his client would eventually be cleared of the charges arising from "that chaotic night."

Mehserle "was a fine young officer with an excellent work history," Miller said at a Sacramento news conference, adding that "this case is not just about a video."

The shooting occurred two weeks ago, early on New Year's morning. Grant and his friends were heading home to the East Bay aboard a BART train after celebrating New Year's Eve in San Francisco when a fight broke out between two groups of riders. BART police met the train at Oakland's Fruitvale station and demanded that passengers disembark.
